Research shows that 90% of pregnant women do not get enough nutrients during pregnancy from food alone and must rely on supplements to make up for this deficiency.
However, they also found that 99% of the inexpensive nutritional supplements available do not contain adequate amounts of important micronutrients that are desperately needed to compensate for nutritional deficiencies.
Nutrition is essential for a healthy mother and baby. An insufficient nutrient can cause birth defects, low birth weight, premature birth and other health problems. Excess can also change the development of the baby’s body and the risk of health problems later.
That’s why eating a balanced diet and choosing a good prenatal nutritional supplement is so essential. The study observed 2,450 women during pregnancy. The data was first analyzed on what the women drank and ate throughout pregnancy.
Then it was determined how much omega-3 fatty acids, iron, calcium, folic acid, vitamin D, and vitamin A each got from food alone, and how much they needed to meet the NIH’s suggested dietary guidelines during pregnancy. They then compared more than 20,000 nutritional supplements.
Of all the generic and prenatal supplements analyzed, only one was identified as potentially providing pregnant women with optimal amounts of the most important nutrients. However, the monthly cost of this supplement may be too much for some individuals, and pregnant women must take 7 pills each day.
These research findings will help advise pregnant women and their doctors about important nutrients that are lacking in their diets and help them choose prenatal supplements that can provide the nutrients they need. Supplement manufacturers can also use these results to improve the dosage of their products.
The research findings highlight the continued need for prenatal supplements that are convenient and affordable while still providing optimal amounts of essential nutrients. More research on nutrients is also needed so that pregnant women can get more of these essential nutrients in their daily diet.
